12 Days Uganda Safari


This 12-day journey will take you to the best safari destinations in Uganda. With game drive and boat launch in Murchison Falls National Park and safaris on the savannah plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, to intimate meetings with the chimpanzees in Kibale Forest and mountain gorilla encounters along the canopy covered trails of Bwindi Forest. The tour wraps up with visits to two of the most beautiful lakes in Uganda, Lake Mutanda and Lake Bunyonyi.

All lodges have self-contained rooms and are selected for their location and service standards.

DAY BY DAY, Uganda Safari

Day 1: Welcome to Uganda

Our company representative will pick you up on arrival at Entebbe International Airport and drive you to your hotel. Just 10 minutes drive from Entebbe international airport. Depending on your arrival time, you can visit interesting places within Entebbe including: Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre; Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary, botanical gardens and others. Journey time: 10 minutes. Breakfast, lunch, dinner & overnight stay at Horizon Hotel. All activities today are at additional cost.

Day 2: Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park

After breakfast you will drive for 6 hours to Murchison Falls National Park. Its most memorable feature is the Victoria Nile which cuts through the park, running along a series of rapids before shooting out of a narrow channel in an incredibly powerful waterfall. A boat safari during your stay will offer a closer look at the majestic falls while providing ample opportunity to see some of the incredible wildlife that the park is known for along the way. Murchison River Lodge is situated directly on the southern bank of the River Nile overlooking Uganda’s largest national park, Murchison Falls. From the vantage point of the lodge bar and restaurant you have the panoramic views of the park and the River Nile as it flows downstream between papyrus islands and pods of hippos. Day 3: Morning Game Drive - Afternoon Boat Cruise

Welcome to morning game drive in the park. You will need to be up before the sun and in the vehicle after a quick snack to see the best sightings. This is when the land is cool and the animals are most active, when anything is possible and sighting comes quickly. Elephants, buffalo and several species of antelope, lions, leopard are some of the animals you may come accross. Later in the day you will take a boat safari towards Murchison Falls which is the special highlight of the day. On this 3-hour journey upstream on the Victoria Nile you will pass by breathtaking scenery, many crocodiles, hippos, buffaloes, water birds, and monkeys that come down to the Nile for a cool drink in the hot afternoon. The boat will drop you near the waterfall for your hike (1-1.5 hrs) up to the top of the falls. Journey time: 3 hours. Day 4: Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

After breakfast, drive through the great libertine rift valley to Kibale passing through colorful tea plantations. Arrive in time for lunch in Fort Portal town. After lunch, you will head to Bigodi wetland for a wetland walk with opportunities to see primates and several bird species. This walk will enable you appreciate the role of the local people around Bigodi in conserving the wetland. You can choose to support them through donation in kind. Please note that this is a voluntary act. Journey time: 5 hours. Breakfast, lunch, dinner & overnight stay at Turaco Treetops-Budget rooms.

Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking in Kibale Forest

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Kibale National Park Headquarters. Here, you will join other trekkers for briefing before you proceed into the forest for chimpanzee trekking. You will be led by a well-trained and experienced ranger/guide who will take you for a guided primate walk inside Kibale Forest National Park. This forest provides an opportunity to visit one of the habituated communities of chimpanzees. You are allowed to spend an hour with these Great Apes while observing their behaviour. You are allowed to take photographs. So make sure your cameras are nearby. Kibale National Park is also home to other 13 primate species which can also be spotted while trekking the Chimpanzees. Of course there are also numerous species of forest birds. In fact, this is another haven for bird lovers. Dinner and overnight stay at Turaco Treetops-Budget rooms.

Day 6: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

After breakfast you will drive for 3½ hours to Queen Elizabeth National Park. This park is Uganda’s most visited game reserve. The national park protects the vast savannah plains, bushland, wetlands and forests that lie at the base of the Rwenzori mountain range. Kazinga Channel, which flows through the park and connects Lake George in the east to Lake Edward in the west is the life blood of the park which attracts numerous animals and birds, including elepants, lions, hippos etc. You will spend the next 2 nights at Marafiki Safari Lodge . The lodge is in a unique location and has been designed and handcrafted using local materials. Overlooking Lake George in the Queen Elizabeth National Park, it offers private luxury safari tents on raised wooden floors and canvas walls that can be rolled up to allow you to sit comfortably watching the Savannah Plains with breathtaking views across the Park and the Rwenzori Mountains. It offers comfort and space for a more modest budget. Journey time: 3½ hours. Breakfast, Lunch, dinner & overnight stay at Marafiki Safari Lodge.

Day 7: Morning Game Drive - Afternoon Boat Safari

Welcome to morning game drive in the park. You will need to be up before the sun and in the vehicle after a quick snack to see the best sightings. This is when the land is cool and the animals are most active, when anything is possible and sighting comes quickly. Elephants, buffalo and several species of antelope, lions, leopard are some of the animals you may come accross. Later in the day you will go for a boat safari. when the sun is high in the sky the animals make their way to the river for a drink, we will head to Kazinga Channel for an exciting boat safari (a fantastic way to get close to wildlif). You can also visit Kyambura Gorge (home to several primate species including chimpanzees, the red-tailed monkey, black-and-white colobus, baboons and vervet monkeys and colorful bird species). This activity is at additional cost of USD 50 per person. Breakfast, Lunch, dinner & overnight stay at Marafiki Safari Lodge.

Day 8: Transfer to Lake Mutanda

After breakfast you will drive for 8 hours south-west toward Kisoro (a bustling town to the south of Bwindi Forest) near the borders to Rwanda and Congo. You will drive pass a winding road, lush rainforests, skirting hill tops, lively villages before arriving to the stunning waters of Lake Mutanda. You will spend the next 2 nights at Mutanda Lake Resort. Perched on a Lake Mutanda peninsula in the shadow of the Virunga Mountains, the resort offers comfortable accommodation combined with the most beautiful views on planet earth. It is a perfect base for gorilla trackers, lake loungers, volcano hikers and bird lovers as well as those looking for a mystical place in nature. Journey time: 8 hours. Breakfast, lunch, dinner & overnight stay at Mutanda Lake Resort.

Day 9: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi forest

After breakfast you will have the opportunity to follow an experienced park ranger deep in the forest to track one of the nine habituated gorilla family residing here. Half of the world’s population of gorillas live under the mist-covered canopies of Uganda’s oldest and most biologically diverse rainforest. This is exciting yet challenging journey along forested (often muddy and slippery) slopes, tangled vines, thick vegetation and bamboo forests before you reach the territory of these gentle giants. En-route, the ranger will point out signs of previous gorilla activity, like dung, nests and chewed bamboo shoots. Depending on the location of the gorillas on any given day the walk can take anything from 2 to 7 hours. Encountering the mountain gorillas is a truly humbling and emotional experience. The lodge will provide your gorilla tracking permit. Remember to bring the permit and your passport when you depart for the hike. Journey time 1 and half hours; Breakfast, packed lunch, dinner and overnight at Mutanda Lake Resort.

Day 10: Transfer to Lake Bunyonyi

After breakfast, you will drive to Lake Bunyonyi, arrive in time for lunch. After lunch, relax at the hotel and later go for boat cruise or canoeing on this lake while doing bird watching. Bunyonyi means 'place of many little birds'. This beautiful lake, surrounded by steep terraced hillsides, contains 29 islands. It is an interesting place to wake up in the early morning. At this time you will see school children paddling dugout canoes to school and farmers transporting their goods to the market place. Here you can fill your time swimming, hiking, bird watching, and taking boat rides to any of the islands on the lake. Lake Bunyoni is bilharzia, croc and hippo free so you can relax and enjoy its cool waters. One of our recommended activities is to go on one of the cultural hikes in the area. This is nice opportunity to learn about the legends, traditions and customs of the people who make a home on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi. On a 5-hour tour you can meet a traditional healer, a craft group, see beautiful views from one of the high points on the lake and try your hand at paddling one of the traditional dugout canoes. Day 11: Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

After breakfast you will drive for 6 hours to Lake Mburo National Park in southern Uganda where you can see zebras, impalas, slender mongoose and giant bush rats. On your game drive in the afternoon you can also look for hyenas, leopards, topis, elands and the beautiful Rothschild's giraffes. The lake itself is home to both hippos and crocodiles. Besides game drives you can fill your time with many optional activities such as horse-riding, mountain biking, bush walks and boat safaris on the lake. You will spend the night at Rwakobo Rock, nestled on a scenic outcrop with breathtaking views. Animals such as zebra, warthog, impala and bushbuck abound around the lodge and often congregate at the water hole beneath the dining area. At night the sounds of bush come to life and allow your imagination to run wild. This idyllic spot is situated just over 1Km from the Nshara Gate of Lake Mburo National Park. Journey: 6 hours. Breakfast, lunch, dinner & overnight stay at Rwakobo Rock.

Day 12: Drive to Kampala/ Entebbe Airport

Like all great journeys, the 12 days safari has come to an end. Enjoy your last sunrise in this beautiful corner of Uganda. After early breakfast you will head out on a walking safari in the park in the company of experience ranger. This is one of the few parks in Uganda where you can follow the experienced ranger on foot. Walking safari offers something quite different to the game drive: the thrill of being on foot in a Big 5 reserve and the chance to engage with the smaller things. You learn about tracking, insects and flowers. It is a chance to have an immersive experience where you get down and touch and smell what is out there while at the same time you never quite know what you will encounter around the next corner. After this you will drive for 6 hours to Entebbe International Airport, stopping at the equator for some souvenir shopping. It is possible to connect with an international flight tonight, but the earliest departure must be at 10pm. Accommodation for tonight is not included in the programme. If you need an extra night in Entebbe we can help arranged for you at an additional cost.
